Oxbridge Cricket Balls

From its earliest beginnings, in sheds behind a cobbler’s cottage, the cricket ball industry has remained very bohemian. Over the years it has become clear that the manufacture of the cricket ball poses problems on a scale and magnitude well beyond the capabilities of this cottage industry. Cricket balls have been plagued by persistent problems including increasing softness, loss of shape during play and lack of visibility during periods of low light.

However the cricket ball industry is now benefiting from a major industrial manufacturer bringing its wide experience of development and innovation into this market.

We (Tiflex Limited of Liskeard, Cornwall, a member of large, Woking based, James Walker Group of companies) now own Oxbridge Cricket Balls, formerly of Ringwood, Hampshire.

We are no strangers to quality being one of the first companies to attain ISO 9001 certification and our more advanced technology balls have been awarded the British Standards Kite Mark.

We are experts in the field of impact and vibration absorbing compounds, particularly where recovery of the compound to its pre-impact state is a key requirement. Many of the products we manufacture are important to our everyday lives, as they are used in such situations for absorbing vibrations in buildings caused by underground railways, in rail tracks caused by trains and in factories caused by machinery to name but a few.
We have brought our huge technological experience of thermoplastics, elastomers, plus synthetic and natural rubbers to challenge the cricket ball industry.

The cricket ball development and manufacturing operation is under the close supervision of Tiflex’s Operations Director, Hugh Rogers.  Hugh, who has his roots in the heartland of English cricket and has, over the past twenty years, played in many of the top leagues, maintains that the problems which have been traditionally associated with cricket balls are no more complicated or difficult to resolve than those which are experienced in the other industries in which Tiflex performs.

Our involvement in cricket is moving the game forward. We have the best testing facilities and in-house trained scientists to develop the products.  We have a state of the art laboratory, part of which has been set aside for the development and testing of cricket balls to maintain an even balance between bat and ball. This extends to specialist balls for coaching batting against varying levels of bounce, swing, movement etc….

Our scientific expertise extends to the field of leather technology, where a unique tanning system has been developed and is now employed.  We have overcome the persistent problem of balls softening during play and going out of shape and have recently developed a white ball which stays white as well as specialist balls for day/night cricket.
